U.S. Army personnel from a nearby installation (likely Oakdale Army Support Facility and possibly Wright-Patterson) reportedly cordoned the area within hours; an object was reportedly transported away by flatbed truck before midnight.

WHJB radio's news director John Murphy was on-scene at Kecksburg the evening of 9 December 1965 and produced a documentary, 'Object in the Woods.' Several of his original audio tapes were reportedly confiscated by men identifying themselves as U.S. military, per his widow's later testimony. Murphy died in a hit-and-run in Ventura, California in February 1969; the case is unsolved.

In 2002, journalist Leslie Kean and the Sci-Fi Channel filed a FOIA suit against NASA seeking documents on the Kecksburg event. The litigation forced a 2007 release of NASA records confirming the agency had been involved in analysis of recovered debris. The originating documents on the recovered material itself were said by NASA to have been lost.

The 9 December 1965 fireball was widely reported in the press as the reentry of Kosmos 96, a Soviet Venera-class spacecraft. Subsequent reanalysis by USAF tracking (NORAD AC J. Oberg, retrospective 1980s) established that Kosmos 96 reentered over Canada some 13 hours earlier; the Kecksburg fireball was a separate object.
