Vimana

☼ folklore Tier 3 — Non-disprovable folklore phenomenon
also: Vimanas, Vaimanika Shastra, flying chariots of the gods

Flying vehicles described in Sanskrit epic and Puranic literature that ancient-astronaut writers recast as preserved memories of extraterrestrial aircraft.

In classical Sanskrit literature a vimana is a flying conveyance, most often the aerial chariot or floating palace of a god or king. The Ramayana’s Pushpaka Vimana carries its riders through the sky and is described in poetic rather than mechanical terms; the Mahabharata and various Puranas mention flying cities and divine vehicles similarly. These texts are mythological and devotional poetry composed over centuries (roughly the first millennium BCE into the first millennium CE). A separate and far later text, the Vaimanika Shastra, is frequently cited as an ancient aeronautical manual; in fact it was dictated in trance by Pandit Subbaraya Shastry between roughly 1918 and 1923 and first published in 1951 — a twentieth-century work, not an ancient one.

On Ancient Aliens and across the ancient-astronaut hypothesis, vimanas are presented as eyewitness descriptions of real flying machines: spacecraft, even mercury-powered propulsion. Proponents quote the Vaimanika Shastra as if it were an antique engineering blueprint and read epic battle scenes as aerial dogfights.

The scholarly response is twofold. First, the Vaimanika Shastra is not ancient and carries no evidential weight for prehistory: a 1974 study by aeronautical engineers at the Indian Institute of Science (H. S. Mukunda and colleagues) found the craft it describes aeronautically unviable, in places violating Newton’s laws. Second, Indologists note that the epic vimanas are coherent products of a rich mythological imagination, no more in need of an extraterrestrial explanation than flying carpets or winged horses in other traditions.
