Ancient astronaut hypothesis
The claim that extraterrestrials visited Earth in deep prehistory and shaped human civilization, religion, and (in the strong form) the genome; founded by von Däniken's Chariots of the Gods? (1968) and rejected by mainstream archaeology.

Erich von Däniken (1935–2026)
Swiss author whose Chariots of the Gods? (1968) founded the modern ancient-astronaut genre — 49 books and roughly 75 million copies sold — and a recurring presenter on Ancient Aliens.
Zecharia Sitchin (1920–2010)
Author of The Earth Chronicles, who claimed Sumerian texts describe the Anunnaki of a planet 'Nibiru' who engineered humanity — the wellspring of the modern Anunnaki mythos.
David Hatcher Childress (b. 1957)
Self-described 'rogue archaeologist,' founder of Adventures Unlimited Press and the World Explorers Club, and an Ancient Aliens regular known for vimana, lost-cities, and Atlantis claims.
Giorgio A. Tsoukalos (b. 1978)
Greek-Swiss promoter of the ancient-astronaut hypothesis and the on-screen face of Ancient Aliens — in every episode since 2009, co-executive producer since 2016 — and the source of the 'I'm not saying it was aliens, but…' meme.

A Roman temple complex in Lebanon famous for the Trilithon — three ~800-ton limestone blocks in the Temple of Jupiter podium — and a recurring Ancient Aliens case for 'impossible' megaliths.
Derinkuyu Underground City
A multi-level underground city carved into the soft volcanic tuff of Cappadocia, Turkey, descending roughly 85 m and capable of sheltering thousands of people with their livestock and provisions.
Easter Island (Rapa Nui) & the Moai
A remote Polynesian island in the southeastern Pacific whose nearly 1,000 monolithic statues, the moai, were carved and erected by the Rapa Nui people between roughly 1250 and 1500 CE.
Great Sphinx of Giza
A limestone lion-bodied, human-headed colossus on the Giza plateau, conventionally dated to Khafre's reign (c. 2500 BC) and a favorite of Ancient Aliens for the disputed 'water-erosion' redating.
Göbekli Tepe
An 11,500-year-old megalithic sanctuary in southeastern Turkey (PPNA, c. 9500–8000 BCE) built by hunter-gatherers — genuinely paradigm-shifting archaeology, frequently and wrongly conscripted into ancient-astronaut and lost-civilization narratives.
Machu Picchu & Inca Polygonal Masonry
A 15th-century Inca royal estate high in the Peruvian Andes, famed alongside the fortress of Sacsayhuamán for mortarless polygonal stonework fitted so tightly a knife blade cannot pass between the blocks.
Nan Madol
A megalithic city of ~92 artificial islets built on a reef off Pohnpei, capital of the Saudeleur dynasty, and an Ancient Aliens staple thanks to local legends of 'floating' basalt stones.
Nazca Lines
Vast geoglyphs in the Peruvian desert made by the Nazca culture (c. 500 BCE–500 CE); von Däniken read them as alien runways, and Joe Nickell reproduced the largest figures with stakes and string in days.
Puma Punku
A precision-stoneworked platform mound in the Tiwanaku complex near Lake Titicaca, Bolivia (built c. AD 536–600); its andesite 'H-blocks' are a staple of ancient-astronaut claims, and a staple of their refutation.
Pyramids of Giza
The Old Kingdom royal necropolis on the Giza plateau — three pyramids built as pharaonic tombs in the 26th century BC, and a perennial staple of Ancient Aliens.
Stonehenge
A Neolithic-to-Bronze-Age stone circle on Salisbury Plain whose Welsh-sourced bluestones make it a recurring Ancient Aliens case for 'impossible' long-distance stone transport.
Teotihuacan
A vast pre-Aztec metropolis in the Valley of Mexico, peaking c. 100–550 AD, cited by Ancient Aliens for the sheets of mica and pools of liquid mercury found in its structures.
Yonaguni Monument
A large submerged sandstone formation off Yonaguni Island, Japan, with strikingly flat terraces and right angles that some interpret as a sunken man-made monument and most geologists regard as natural.
