The Father Gill / Boianai Sighting under-corroborated
On the nights of 26-27 June 1959 the Anglican missionary Rev. William Gill
and roughly 25 mission staff and locals at Boianai, Papua New Guinea watched
a large hovering disc with four humanoid figures on its upper deck — and when
the witnesses waved, the figures appeared to wave back. About 25 people signed
Gill's contemporaneous written statement, making it one of the best-documented
multi-witness close encounters on record.
Father Gill is the multi-witness counterweight to single-witness trace cases.
Its strength is not physics but human testimony at scale: an educated, sober
clergyman as primary witness, ~25 co-witnesses with a contemporaneous signed
record, an apparent interactive element (reciprocal waving), and an
observation lasting hours at relatively close range. It became a touchstone
in the UFO-versus-skeptic debate precisely because the famous skeptical
explanation (Venus) strains hard against the reported facts — a clean test of
how far misidentification arguments can be pushed.

It struggles badly: Gill reportedly wore corrected glasses, separately identified Venus that night, and the explanation cannot account for ~25 co-witnesses, four discrete figures, the reciprocal waving, or the object's reported nearness and structure.

Added on 2026 re-audit — stronger than the Venus theory the corpus had been straw-manning. A squid boat rigged with multi-thousand-watt lamps throws a halo onto cloud base, drifts slowly, persists for hours, and shows rigging (the 'pencil-thin' up-beam), railings, and working men (the 'figures'); a false sea horizon makes it appear to hover. It accounts for the structure, figures, beam, drift, and duration that Venus cannot — prosaic, and without impugning Gill. Unverified (Boianai's 1959 sea-traffic isn't established; a possible azimuth discrepancy cuts both ways), but a viable optical reading the case cannot exclude.

The reciprocal 'waving' — the case's signature residual — is also its most suggestible, least-instrumented element (bright-source flicker + parallax + group expectation in low light), and no witness account is demonstrably independent of Gill, the group's 'holy man.'

Hynek judged the primary object could not be astronomical (Venus) given its apparent size and stationary period — but 'not Venus' is not 'not a boat'; the case is a strong unexplained CE-3 resting entirely on witness number and quality, with no physical, photographic, or instrument record.

- The surviving signed witness statements and original interview transcripts (Hynek's and the Australian investigators') subjected to fresh scrutiny for consistency and independence.
- A rigorous astronomical reconstruction of the 26-27 June 1959 Boianai sky (Venus, Jupiter, Mars, Saturn positions and brightness, horizon, weather) to test whether any planet could have been confused with the primary object — and to verify Gill's claim that he saw Venus separately.
- Independent accounts from any still-living secondary witnesses or their families, not shaped by Gill.

Reclassified from phenomenologically-open to under-corroborated on a 2026 adversarial
re-audit. The case is entirely testimonial — no physical, photographic, or instrument
record exists, and no witness account is demonstrably independent of Gill — so however
many people signed (~25), the corpus has corroborated TESTIMONY of an impressive
experience, not corroborated EVIDENCE of an anomalous object. The earlier 'held open'
reasoning rested on a straw man: it rebutted only Menzel's weak Venus theory and never
engaged the stronger prosaic reading (Kottmeyer's brilliantly-lit squid-fishing boat
against a false horizon), which accounts for the structure, figures, light beam, drift,
and duration that Venus cannot. The signed multi-witness record keeps it well above a
hoax or bare single-witness case (so not lower than under-corroborated), but the
testimonial-only nature plus a viable optical reading place it at under-corroborated.
