The Betty and Barney Hill Abduction under-corroborated
On the night of 19-20 September 1961, Betty and Barney Hill — an
interracial New Hampshire couple driving home from a Canadian vacation —
reported being followed by a bright light near Indian Head and later
realized they could not account for roughly two hours of the drive. Under
hypnosis in 1964 with Boston psychiatrist Dr. Benjamin Simon, both
separately produced a detailed narrative of being taken aboard a craft
and medically examined by humanoid beings. Popularized by John Fuller's
1966 bestseller, it became the first widely-publicized abduction account
and the template for the entire phenomenon — though Dr. Simon himself
concluded it was not a literal event.
The Hill case is the foundational alien-abduction narrative. It
introduced, or first popularized at scale, nearly every trope that would
define the genre: "missing time," hypnotic regression as the mechanism
for recovering the memory, the onboard medical examination (the needle
into Betty's navel), large-eyed grey humanoids, and the "star map" later
read as Zeta Reticuli. It is the corpus's keystone for the abduction

initial light as a probable misidentification — the planet Jupiter was
then prominent. The sighting itself is taken seriously; the abduction
is not yet part of the account.
