The Domsten Encounter documented-hoax
In the early hours of 20 December 1958, two young men — Hans Gustavsson (24) and Stig
Rydberg (30) — reported that on the coast road near Domsten they encountered a small
disc-shaped craft on legs and three or four shapeless grey "protoplasm" beings that
tried to drag Gustavsson toward the object before the men broke free and fled. For
three decades it stood as Sweden's most famous humanoid encounter; in 1989 Swedish
researchers Anders Liljegren and Clas Svahn documented it as a fabrication.
Domsten is the corpus's first Swedish close encounter (Sweden previously appeared only
in the 1946 ghost-rockets wave) and one of its cleanest worked examples of the gap
between SINCERITY and TRUTH. Two distressed witnesses impressed police and investigators,
reportedly passed examinations, were among the earliest CE witnesses subjected to
hypnosis — and the account was still a hoax. It is the rare case that crosses the full
arc from "phenomenologically vivid" to "documented-hoax" within a single national
UFO-research community's own work, which is why it is filed under that community's verdict
rather than the believer literature's.

In the early morning hours, after driving home along the coast road near Domsten
(north of Helsingborg), Gustavsson and Rydberg report seeing a strange light and a
disc-shaped object ~5 m across and ~1 m high resting on legs, from which several
small, shapeless, lead-grey "protoplasm"/blob beings emerged. The beings reportedly
seized the men and tried to pull Gustavsson toward the craft; Rydberg broke free,
reached the car, and sounded the horn, whereupon the beings retreated into the object
and it departed. (Some accounts give the date as the night of 19→20 December; the
encounter is consistently placed at ~3 a.m. on the 20th.)

The men stay silent for roughly three days, reportedly suffering anxiety, sleeplessness
and physical signs (bruising, reddened eyes). The case becomes public after a relative
(per English accounts, Gustavsson's mother) contacts the press; Helsingborgs Dagblad
reports it. National and then international UFO publicity follows.

1959-01-09
The two men are interviewed at length (English accounts cite an interview of over 11
hours) by police and others; investigators report finding nothing indicating a hoax.
The men reportedly later underwent medical/psychiatric examination — and were among the
earliest UFO close-encounter witnesses to be placed under hypnosis — and were pronounced
psychologically sound men who had undergone a frightening experience. (NOTE: an
examination can establish that witnesses BELIEVE/are distressed; it cannot establish that
the reported event occurred.)

1959_to_1980s
The case is taken up by Swedish ufology (notably K. Gösta Rehn, 1891–1989, the leading
Swedish ufologist of the era — NOT the economist Lars Gösta Rehn) and circulates
internationally as a flagship "hostile-occupant" close encounter, among the most famous
humanoid cases to come out of Scandinavia.

Anders Liljegren and Clas Svahn of AFU (Arkivet för UFO-forskning, Norrköping) publish
"Domstensfallet — en svensk närkontakt 1958," a 96-page study concluding after years of
investigation that the case was a fabrication. They report it was inspired by the science-
fiction comic/serial "Tom Trick," by contemporary advertising for flying-saucer books, and
by the men's knowledge that the Helsingborg–Domsten road was a locally notorious "ghost"
stretch; the motive given is fame and money. Three associates — named in accounts as
Gustavsson's brother Artur Gustafsson, Christian Johansen, and Martha Christiansson — are
reported to have stated the men told them it was a hoax.

no physical evidence and no independent corroboration of the EVENT — only corroboration of
the witnesses' state. In 1989 Anders Liljegren and Clas Svahn (AFU) documented it as a
fabrication, tracing its sources and citing associates who said the men admitted the hoax.
The case is therefore the corpus's cleanest worked demonstration that sincerity, lie-detector
passes and psychological soundness measure BELIEF, not truth — and a caution against treating
an under-corroborated CE3 as resolved-genuine merely because its witnesses are convincing.
(Had the 1989 disproof not existed, the honest filing would have been under-corroborated, like
the Finnish Imjärvi case; the documented confession is what moves it past that.)
