The Green Fireballs of New Mexico phenomenologically-open
A wave of vivid green, near-horizontal, silent fireballs over New Mexico's
nuclear and military sites beginning December 1948 led meteoriticist Dr. Lincoln
LaPaz to argue they were not ordinary meteors, prompting Project Twinkle
(1950-51) — the first official US instrumented optical study of an aerial
anomaly — which collected too little data to resolve the case.
This is the corpus's earliest INSTRUMENTED-investigation keystone: the first
time the US government stood up a dedicated scientific study (cinetheodolites,
spectrographic cameras) to capture and measure an aerial anomaly. Its lesson is
methodological — an under-resourced apparatus that kept missing the phenomenon
produced no resolving data, so a real, repeatedly-witnessed wave near the
nation's most sensitive nuclear sites remains open. It anchors the

A conference at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (room P-162) draws LaPaz,
upper-atmosphere physicist Joseph Kaplan, Edward Teller, lab director Norris
Bradbury, and Army/Air Force/FBI/AEC representatives. No origin is agreed;
Teller reasons on a blackboard that a silent object 'could not be a material
body passing through the air,' favoring an electrical phenomenon.

1949-1951
Project Twinkle is established (late 1949 / 1950) near White Sands/Holloman —
an instrumented photographic and spectrographic study to capture the fireballs.
Under-resourced (often one mobile station instead of three), it repeatedly
misses the phenomenon; a Sept 1950 AMC memo notes the fireballs 'ceased
abruptly as soon as a systematic watch was set up.' The final report (Nov 1951)
is inconclusive and the project is discontinued.
