The Kaikoura Lights disputed-optical-artifact
A series of radar-visual events off Kaikoura, New Zealand in late December
1978 culminated in 16mm film shot from a Safe Air cargo plane on 31 December —
lights reportedly filmed, tracked on ground and airborne radar, and seen by
experienced pilots simultaneously. It became the most-cited Southern
Hemisphere multi-modal case, and was later largely (but contestedly)
explained as squid-boat lights, planets, and atmospheric and radar anomalies.
Kaikoura pairs eyewitness testimony (experienced commercial pilots),
independent audio tape recordings, professional news film, and claimed
correlation with both Wellington ATC ground radar and the aircraft's own
radar — an unusually 'all-channel' record. It became a worldwide media event
and a test case for whether even multi-channel UFO evidence survives prosaic
scrutiny. Skeptics argue it does not: each channel has a plausible mundane
counter, and the squid-boat-plus-planets combination is the mainstream reading.

On the Wellington-to-Christchurch midnight run, an Australian Channel 0 TV
crew (reporter Quentin Fogarty, cameraman David Crockett) boards a Safe Air
Argosy to film a background piece. Pilots and crew observe lights for minutes
at a time; the cameraman films them on 16mm, Wellington ATC reportedly tracks
returns, and the aircraft's ground-mapping radar reportedly shows a return
matching a light.

US optical physicist Bruce Maccabee obtains the footage and publishes a
pro-anomaly photometric analysis (calculating one object as extremely bright
and ~20 m+). Fogarty and Startup publish books on the case.

Former DSIR scientist William Ireland publishes a retrospective concluding
the filmed images are consistent with squid-boat lights seen through a zoom
lens at ~6 km — multiple parallel rows of discrete lights, not a single
source. Maccabee disputes that squid boats were operating where required.
