The Tinley Park Lights disputed-optical-artifact
Across 2004-2005, hundreds of witnesses over the Chicago southwest suburbs
independently reported three (sometimes more) steady red/orange lights drifting
slowly and silently, often in a triangle — among the best-documented modern
mass nocturnal-light cases, and the textbook test of the sky-lantern
explanation, which the scale-free nature of distant night lights leaves
formally unresolved.
Tinley Park is the corpus's clean modern study in the limits of mass witnesses
plus video. Despite ~175 independent reports and 14+ amateur videos, the case
cannot be resolved because point-source lights against a black sky carry no
distance, size, or scale cue — so 'huge silent craft' and 'small lanterns 1-2
miles upwind' produce identical imagery. It is the canonical sky-lantern test
case: the prosaic candidate is specific and plausible, yet the data are
structurally incapable of refuting or confirming it. The companion in spirit to
the Yukon and Phoenix lights — the size/distance-judgment problem.
