On the night of 30-31 March 1993 sightings of a triangular craft and bright lights spread across south-west England and the Midlands. Around 1:15 am RAF Cosford police saw bright lights and alerted the meteorological officer at RAF Shawbury, who reported a low, slow craft with a laser-like beam sweeping the ground and an unpleasant low rumble before it accelerated away - and the object was reportedly not detected on radar. The MoD’s UFO desk (Nick Pope) investigated and a 22 April 1993 minute conceded possible ‘considerable defence significance.’ The bulk of the widespread bright-lights reports is now widely attributed to the re-entry of the Russian rocket body Cosmos 2238 shortly after midnight; the close, low-craft Shawbury account is the genuinely contested residue.
