aka Colares / Operacao Prato (1977-1978, Brazil)

Residents of Colares and the Brazilian Amazon reported beams of light from UFOs ('chupa-chupa') that caused burns and puncture marks; the Brazilian Air Force ran an official investigation, Operacao Prato (Operation Saucer), collecting photographs, film, and medical reports.

under-corroborated Reclassified from phenomenologically-open to under-corroborated on a 2026 adversarial re-audit. The extraordinary medical claims (burns, punctures, deaths) appear only in a 1993 interview ~16 years later, absent from the 1977-78 operational reports, over a partly-hoaxed photo base; a strong prosaic stack (mass psychogenic panic + endemic vampire-bat/malaria/anemia + light misID + admitted photo fakery) covers the wave. Operação Prato is real; the exotic causation is unverified.

In 1977-78 a wave of UFO reports swept Colares and other communities in Para, Brazil, in which residents described luminous objects projecting beams (‘chupa-chupa’, the ‘sucker’) that left burns, paired puncture marks, and anemia-like symptoms. The Brazilian Air Force mounted an official investigation, Operacao Prato (Operation Saucer), led by Capt. Uyrange Hollanda, which gathered photographs, film, and reports over roughly four months; the dossier was later declassified to Brazil’s Arquivo Nacional. The case is notable for an official military investigation and a town health-post director’s documentation of dozens of injured patients - but the radiation framing lacks dosimetry, some photographs are admitted hoaxes, and the Air Force’s own conclusion was that nothing anomalous was proven. Hollanda gave a 1997 interview affirming his belief and died by hanging about three months later.
