IncidentGeorge Adamski & the Contactee Movement (1952-1965)

George Adamski (1891-1965), a Polish-American mystic who ran a cafe near Palomar Mountain and had earlier founded the ‘Royal Order of Tibet,’ claimed a 20 November 1952 desert meeting (with six affidavit witnesses) with Orthon, a telepathic blond Venusian who warned of nuclear danger. He co-authored ‘Flying Saucers Have Landed’ (1953, with Desmond Leslie) and ‘Inside the Space Ships’ (1955), lectured for fees, and circulated photographs of a domed ‘Venusian scout ship’ - which skeptics immediately matched to household parts (a chicken-brooder, GE light bulbs as ‘landing struts,’ a gas-lantern reflector dome). His claimed endorsements were fabricated or trivial: the ‘Straith Letter’ (a State Department endorsement) was later admitted by James Moseley and Gray Barker to be their hoax, and a claimed papal audience rested on a cheap tourist medal (a real 1959 audience with Queen Juliana did occur, but the Dutch air chief called him ‘a pathological case’). Adamski is the originator of the contactee template - benevolent human-looking ‘Space Brothers,’ telepathic contact, channeled cosmic wisdom - the quasi-religious strand that diverged from nuts-and-bolts ufology and seeded later groups (Aetherius Society, Unarius, ultimately Heaven’s Gate). The anomaly here is sociological, not physical.
