During a documented thunderstorm on the night of 9 January 1986, a family near Capilla del Monte (Cordoba) reported a luminous round object with ‘little windows’ over the slope of Cerro El Pajarillo, below Cerro Uritorco; the next day a large oval of burned grass (~120 m x 64 m) was found there. Locals first attributed it to a lightning strike, but the municipality officially endorsed a UFO explanation by 27 January - within three weeks, before any forensic soil analysis - and Nuevediario reporter Jose de Zer and cameraman Carlos ‘Chango’ Torres turned the site into a national sensation. In 2002, Torres confessed to Pagina/12 that the coverage was fraudulent: ‘The stain was real, but everything else was pure fiction’ - staged insects, painted cave drawings, nail-polish ‘alien’ rocks, a faked summit camp, flashlight/cigarette ‘lights.’ The case made Capilla del Monte a UFO/New Age tourism capital (the annual Festival Alienigena).
