IncidentBetty and Barney Hill Abduction (19-20 September 1961)

aka Betty and Barney Hill Abduction (19-20 September 1961)

An interracial New Hampshire couple reported being followed by a bright light near Indian Head and losing two hours of a night drive; under hypnosis in 1964 both separately produced an abduction narrative - the first widely-publicized abduction case and the template for the phenomenon.

under-corroborated A real anomalous light sighting by sincere witnesses, but the abduction surfaced only through hypnosis (an unreliable method), was doubted by the hypnotist himself, and has no physical corroboration. The foundational abduction case, held under-corroborated.

The foundational alien-abduction narrative. Betty and Barney Hill experienced a real, credibly-reported anomalous light on Route 3 on the night of 19-20 September 1961, and could not account for about 35 miles of the drive. Beginning with Betty’s recurring nightmares and then, decisively, under hypnosis with psychiatrist Dr. Benjamin Simon in 1964, both produced a detailed account of being taken aboard a craft and medically examined. Popularized by John Fuller’s 1966 bestseller, it introduced ‘missing time’, hypnotic regression, the onboard exam, the large-eyed greys, and the Zeta Reticuli ‘star map’. Dr. Simon himself concluded it was not literal - a transferred dream - and modern research holds that hypnosis manufactures, rather than recovers, confident memory.
