Identified 19 October 2017 by Robert Weryk using Pan-STARRS (about 40 days after closest solar approach, so already departing), ‘Oumuamua’s hyperbolic, unbound orbit confirmed the first interstellar object (designation 1I; the name is Hawaiian for ‘scout’). Its documented anomalies: an extreme axis ratio (~10:1, inferred from large brightness variation - cigar-like or flat/disc), reddish color, tumbling rotation, and crucially a small non-gravitational acceleration as it left the Sun with NO detected coma, outgassing, or dust tail (Micheli et al., Nature 2018). Loeb and Bialy (ApJL 2018) argued the smooth inverse-square push without a tail could be solar radiation pressure on a very thin object - implying a possible artificial light-sail (Loeb’s 2021 book ‘Extraterrestrial’).
