Incident"Snippy" the Horse (September 1967)
aka "Snippy" the Horse (September 1967)
In September 1967 near Alamosa, Colorado, a 3-year-old Appaloosa mare (real name 'Lady,' famous as 'Snippy') was found dead with its head and neck stripped to bone; the owner blamed UFOs, the press ran with it nationally, and the case became the founding seed of the 'cattle/animal mutilation' mythology - though investigation pointed to a mundane death plus ordinary scavenging and decomposition.

Notable & intriguing
-
The case’s namesake is a misnomer: the horse’s real name was ‘Lady’ (‘Snippy’ was the sire’s name) - the most famous animal-mutilation case in history is remembered under the wrong horse’s name.

-
The contemporaneous UFO establishment rejected it: NICAP (1 Dec 1967) called it ‘neither a UFO case nor particularly mysterious,’ the Air Force-funded Condon study found no abnormal causation, and a veterinarian later found bullet wounds in the flank.
