The Allagash Abduction under-corroborated
Four art-school friends on a 1976 Maine canoe trip reported a bright color-
shifting sphere over Eagle Lake and a missing-time return; thirteen years
later, under hypnosis after one suffered a head injury and seizures, all
recovered matching memories of being floated aboard a craft and examined. It
became a leading 'multiple-witness' abduction case until 2016, when one of the
four called the abduction 'brilliant storytelling' they invented to make money.
Allagash became one of the most-cited multiple-witness abduction cases,
leaning on the claim that four men independently recovered corroborating
memories. It is now equally important as a cautionary tale: the corroboration
was hypnosis-generated, and a partial recantation by one participant exposed
the financial and interpersonal dynamics behind such cases — a clean study,
alongside the Hill case, in why hypnosis manufactures rather than recovers
memory.

Beginning January 1989, hypnotist Anthony Constantino conducts separate
