In autumn 1989 TASS wired a report, carried worldwide, that a shining ball had landed in a Voronezh park on 27 September and that children watched three-to-four-metre, three-eyed beings and a robot emerge, with a boy briefly paralyzed. The story’s significance is as a media event: it was arguably the first time a superpower’s official wire service reported a UFO landing as established fact. It unravelled quickly: geophysicist Genrikh Silanov, quoted by TASS as confirming the site via ‘biolocation,’ publicly repudiated the agency (‘Don’t believe all you hear from TASS’); a TV crew found no adult witnesses beyond the children; site testing found no anomaly; and the ‘alien rock’ was ordinary hematite.
