The Trans-en-Provence Case under-corroborated
On 8 January 1981 the farmer Renato Nicolai watched a dull lead-grey disc
land in his garden terrace and depart. Within days the official French
agency GEPAN/CNES collected soil and plant samples, and a two-year study
reported compacted, heated soil and biochemical stress in nearby wild
alfalfa — making this the single most laboratory-documented sighting on
record, though it rests on one witness and a contested analysis.
Trans-en-Provence is the rare UFO case investigated by an official state
agency (GEPAN, within France's space agency CNES) with the full machinery
of physical science — gendarmerie chain-of-custody sampling, multiple
laboratories, a published technical report. The claim that a sighting left
reproducible physical and biochemical traces, not just testimony, is what
elevates it. If the soil and plant anomalies are real and unexplained, it
is a genuine physical-evidence anomaly; if they are tire marks plus normal
plant stress, it is a cautionary tale about over-reading ambiguous evidence.

The leading mundane reading, strengthened on 2026 re-audit: the gendarmerie's OWN report described 'stries noires semblables a des traces de ripage de pneumatiques' (tire-slip striations), the marks appear on only TWO diametrically opposed arcs (consistent with discrete wheel movement, not a coherent disc footprint, and not matching Nicolai's saucer geometry), masonry/vehicle work was underway at the property, and the trace was shown to investigators only the next day.

Added on re-audit: Bounias's work was found to have 'a lot of holes and mistakes' — no true pre-event controls, chlorophyll measured against ASSUMED baselines, ordinary confounders (drought, senescence, sampling) unexcluded, never blind-reproduced. And a paradox: if the soil was heated to 300-600C, why is there no thermal damage to the plants growing in it? The 'heating' inference and the plant biochemistry do not cohere with a single physical cause.
A genuine physical anomaly

GEPAN concluded a real physical event it could not explain; the distance-graded plant gradient is the hardest residual. But a gradient is ALSO what a localized mundane stressor (a hot engine, spilled fluid, a small fire, crushing along a wheel path) produces — it establishes a localized cause, not an exotic one. The heat/pressure figures are model inferences, not measurements; the samples lacked true controls; the work was never blind-reproduced; and it rests on a single, arguably-unreliable witness (Nicolai later: 'sometimes at night I dream').

but procedural pedigree is not evidential weight. Its entire anomalous content hinges on
a single (arguably unreliable) witness plus physical traces with a live, specific mundane
candidate that the gendarmerie itself flagged (tire-ripage from vehicle/masonry work, on
two opposed arcs that don't match the disc geometry), and a contested, control-free,
never-blind-reproduced plant analysis carrying an unresolved internal contradiction
(300-600C heating but no thermal damage to the plants). 'Phenomenologically-open' should
be reserved for residuals that survive their strongest mundane candidate; here the
leading prosaic explanation has not been excluded and the supporting science is impeached,
not merely incomplete — so under-corroborated is the honest label. Still the most
laboratory-documented trace case on record.
