The Valensole Incident under-corroborated
At dawn on 1 July 1965 the lavender farmer Maurice Masse reported a landed
egg-shaped craft and two small humanoid beings who paralyzed him with a
hand-held device; afterward the site bore symmetrical ground marks and a
patch of lavender that reportedly would not grow for years — one of the
strongest single-witness physical-trace close encounters on record.
Valensole bundles nearly every high-strangeness element — a landed craft,
small beings, a paralysis device, physical ground traces, lasting soil/plant
effects, and witness after-effects — onto a single witness widely judged
sober and credible by neighbors, clergy, and the gendarmerie. It is logged in
France's national archive (GEIPAN) as classification D (unidentified), and it
became a 1960s European touchstone for its unprompted resemblance to the 1964
Socorro case — the cleanest test of a credible single witness plus traces.

Around 5:45-6:00 am, Masse, smoking before work, sees an ovoid craft land
~60-90 m away and two small large-headed beings examining the lavender; one
points a pencil-like device and Masse is paralyzed, fully conscious, for
~15-20 minutes. He later said the beings 'were good' and did not wish to harm
him, and consistently refused to disclose all that passed between them.

Added on 2026 re-audit and previously absent: the ground marks and hardened/chemically-altered soil resemble a chalk-treated liquid-fertilizer tank installed in an adjacent field — directly undercutting the 'unexplained hole + dead lavender' pillar. Pierre Guerin attributed the ~18% soil-calcium elevation to the object instead, but Guerin is a partisan source and the cistern hypothesis is disputed, not refuted.
Helicopter misidentification (the 'Provence 65' military exercise)

Light-aviation units were operating ~19 km away during a military exercise from 29 June; a turbine whistle could match the sound. But a landed helicopter does not produce a conscious-paralysis episode, and Masse explicitly rejected a helicopter — so this at best explains a sound, not the encounter.
Comic-book inspiration / confabulation
proponents: Raoul Robe
Robe identified a 1950s French illustrated story (set in Provence, with a saucer, small mute aliens, and a paralyzing ray) and noted Masse was called a 'galejeur' (kidder). But skeptic Gilles Fernandez reviewed the full comic and judged the parallels weak and the thesis 'improbable' — even the skeptical community doesn't endorse it.

Investigators found Masse truthful, and the unprompted match to Aime Michel's Socorro-craft drawing (8 Aug 1965) is notable. But every high-strangeness element (beings, paralysis, the Socorro match) is filtered through Masse alone, his testimony demonstrably evolved across three statements (2/5 July, 23 Aug 1965, the 'giant spider' detail growing), and the one physically-real component (the soil/lavender) has a named mundane candidate.
Where further investigation has leverage
- The original 1965 gendarmerie file with contemporaneous photos and soil notes (some material is in GEIPAN); a full release/audit would help.
- Any 1965 soil/chemical analysis of the hardened patch (compaction vs chemical alteration), and independent botanical documentation of the lavender die-off versus anecdote.
- A second independent eyewitness (none firmly established) or contemporaneous physical photos of the marks.

re-audit. Valensole is a single-witness CE whose every high-strangeness element rests on
Masse alone, whose testimony demonstrably evolved across three 1965 statements, and whose
one physically-real component (the soil/lavender trace) has a specific, unrefuted mundane
candidate — Caudron's chalk-treated fertilizer cistern in an adjacent field. That is
exactly the profile the corpus's own discipline caps at under-corroborated. It remains
materially stronger than a bare anecdote (a credible, attention-averse witness; GEIPAN
classification D; documented traces; the unprompted Socorro-craft match), but it does not
RESIST prosaic reading the way a multi-witness or instrumented case does. Not a
disputed-optical-artifact, documented-hoax, or apparatus-event (no positive hoax
evidence, no optical-illusion mechanism, no device in play) — under-corroborated is the
honest floor and ceiling.
