Mitchell Flat southeast of Marfa, Texas, viewed from an official highway
platform — mostly attributed by a 2004 real-time field study to distant car
headlights on US-67 distorted across the flat, with a small contested residue
(and folkloric pre-automobile anecdotes) keeping a faint genuine-earthlight
question open.
Marfa is the corpus's accessible, partly-instrumented 'earthlight' case — the
American companion to Hessdalen. A recurring light over a fixed location,
viewable on demand, that has attracted real instrumentation, it is a clean
teaching case in the structure 'recurring light + strong mundane majority
explanation + contested residue.' The headlights-across-the-flat explanation is
unusually well-demonstrated (a real-time correlation, not a hand-wave), yet
pre-automobile claims and a handful of instrumented 'unexplained' events
prevent total closure — exactly the epistemic shape the corpus exists to model.

The famous origin anecdote — cowhand Robert Reed Ellison seeing a flickering
light at Paisano Pass and wondering if it was an Apache campfire — is
FOLKLORIC: no contemporaneous record exists; the story survives only via
descendants and post-dates Ellison's own 1937 memoirs, in which he did not

The Society of Physics Students (UT Dallas) runs a four-night investigation
with traffic monitors, cameras, and chase cars: light frequency correlates
with US-67 traffic, light motion runs in straight lines matching the highway,
and a parked car's flashed headlights produce an apparent 'Marfa light' at the
platform. They conclude all lights seen over the four nights are attributable
to vehicle headlights on US-67.

with Bunnell; a 2008 spectroscopy run finds candidate lights 'easily explained
