From a December 1981 peak (15-20 sightings a week), the Hessdalen valley in central Norway became the subject of Project Hessdalen (from 1983, led by Erling Strand) and later the automatic measurement station and the Italian-Norwegian EMBLA campaigns (Massimo Teodorani). White, yellow, or red glowing balls, from ~0.5 to ~30 m and lasting seconds to over an hour, have been recorded with cameras, radar, magnetometers, and spectrometers. The case is a model for instrumented study of an aerial anomaly: several natural mechanisms (ionized/dusty plasma fed by radon decay, piezoelectric discharge from the quartz-rich rock, a ‘geological battery’ with the river as electrolyte) are individually plausible and partly evidenced, but no single mechanism cleanly reproduces the full range of behavior, leaving a genuine residue.
