InvestigationProject Blue Book Special Report No. 14 (1955)
aka Project Blue Book Special Report No. 14 (1955)
The largest statistical study of UFO reports the U.S. Air Force ever commissioned: Battelle Memorial Institute analyzed 3,201 cases and found that the better-documented a sighting was, the more likely it remained 'unknown' — and that 'knowns' and 'unknowns' were statistically distinct populations at better than 99% confidence.

Notable & intriguing
-
Of the 3,201 reports Battelle evaluated, 21.5% were classified ‘unknown’ even after analysis — a residual the Air Force’s public summary attributed to insufficient data rather than to a distinct phenomenon.
Project Blue Book Special Report No. 14, Battelle Memorial Institute / ATIC, 1955; statistical reanalysis by Bruce Maccabee, Journal of UFO Studies
-
The proportion of ‘unknowns’ increased with the rated quality of the report: roughly 33% of ‘Excellent’-quality reports remained unidentified, versus a much smaller share of ‘Poor’ ones — contradicting the hypothesis that unknowns were simply badly-observed knowns.
Special Report No. 14, tables of report quality vs. identification, 1955
-
A chi-square test comparing ‘known’ and ‘unknown’ objects across six observed characteristics found less than a 1% probability that they were drawn from the same population — a statistical signal the report’s own narrative summary did not foreground.
