Ancient astronaut hypothesis

The ancient-astronaut hypothesis (also “paleocontact”) holds that intelligent extraterrestrials visited Earth in antiquity, were remembered as gods, and left their fingerprints on ancient art, architecture, and scripture. Its founding popular text is Erich von Däniken’s Chariots of the Gods? (1968), the best-selling work in the genre; Zecharia Sitchin’s Earth Chronicles (from 1976) supplied the elaborate Anunnaki-from-Nibiru variant that now dominates popular lore. The hypothesis is built almost entirely from “out-of-place” anomalies — the Nazca Lines read as runways, the precision masonry of Puma Punku, the age of Göbekli Tepe, the “wheel within a wheel” of Ezekiel, the Vimanas of the Sanskrit epics, the Sumerian Anunnaki. In each case the argument is the same: the originating culture could not have done this, so someone else did.

That argument fails in the same way each time. Where proponents claim “no antecedents,” archaeologists point to local developmental sequences (Puma Punku’s precursors at Chiripa and Pukara; the long mastaba-to-pyramid trajectory in Egypt). Where they claim impossibility, experimenters demonstrate the methods: Joe Nickell reproduced the largest Nazca figures with stakes and cord in days; Stella Nair replicated Puma Punku’s joints with stone tools. The hypothesis is classed as pseudoarchaeology and has been the subject of formal critiques by Kenneth Feder and others. The corpus carries it as folklore — a durable narrative structure, not a defensible empirical claim — while keeping the mainstream-adjacent Younger Dryas precursor-civilization sub-thesis (Hancock) filed separately, since it does not require extraterrestrials.
