IncidentThe Aurora, Texas Airship Crash (17 April 1897)
aka The Aurora, Texas Airship Crash (17 April 1897)
On 17 April 1897, during the great American 'mystery airship' wave, a Dallas Morning News dispatch claimed an airship crashed into a windmill on Judge Proctor's farm in Aurora, Texas, killing a pilot 'not of this world' who was given a Christian burial in the town cemetery - a story existing almost entirely in one reporter's account and widely judged a town-boosting newspaper hoax, the airship-era ancestor of the modern crash-retrieval legend.

The story exists almost entirely in S.E. Haydon’s single 1897 Dallas Morning News dispatch; Aurora resident Etta Pegues told Time that Haydon ‘wrote it as a joke and to bring interest to Aurora,’ and internal tells (Proctor had no windmill; ‘Officer Weems’ was the town blacksmith) point to satire.

1970s revivals (Bill Case / MUFON, 1973) added decades-late witnesses and claimed ~95% aluminum / 5% iron grave fragments, never independently assayed; the cemetery refused exhumation, the marker disappeared, and a 2008 ground-penetrating-radar survey found only an untestable 1890s grave.
