IncidentThe Brown Mountain Lights (North Carolina)
aka The Brown Mountain Lights (North Carolina)
The Brown Mountain Lights are recurring glowing orbs reported over Brown Mountain in the Blue Ridge of western North Carolina, viewable from overlooks like Wiseman's View - investigated twice by the US Geological Survey (1913, 1922), which attributed them overwhelmingly to distant man-made lights (car and train headlights, brush fires, stationary lamps) seen across the valley and enhanced by atmospheric refraction, leaving only a small contested residue.

Notable & intriguing
-
George Rogers Mansfield’s definitive 1922 USGS report attributed the Brown Mountain Lights to ~47% automobile headlights, ~33% train headlights, ~10% stationary lights, and ~10% brush fires - distant man-made lights seen across the valley and enhanced by atmospheric refraction (a 1977 Oak Ridge experiment reproduced the effect with a projected arc light).

Appalachian State physicist Daniel Caton’s multi-camera monitoring logged ~6,300 viewing hours with no unexplained lights, except a contested July 2016 dual-camera capture of a round glowing light he could not readily explain - the principal modern residual event.
