IncidentThe Council Bluffs Molten-Metal Case (17 December 1977)

At ~7:45 PM on 17 December 1977, witnesses (three teenagers, plus two couples) reported a reddish object descending near Big Lake Park; Assistant Fire Chief Jack Moore reached the scene ~15 minutes later and found a ~4x6 ft patch of glowing molten metal ‘boiling down to the edges of the levee,’ which stayed warm ~2 hours and was checked non-radioactive. Samples were analyzed at Iowa State University / Ames Laboratory and at the local Griffin Pipe foundry: chiefly iron with <1% Ni/Cr and ~0.70% carbon (high-carbon steel), plus slag — Ames called it ‘consistent with smelter slag, very similar to that from a few operations in eastern Nebraska where they were using auto scrap to make manhole covers,’ and explicitly ruled out a meteorite (which would show much higher nickel). A 2022 re-analysis (Garry Nolan, Jacques Vallee, et al.) found all isotope ratios consistent with terrestrial values (‘the overall sample could have been made with terrestrial-derived materials’), attributing the lone Fe-57 anomaly to instrument contamination. The ‘UFO’ status rests entirely on the coincident light sighting; no craft was recovered. With two local foundries capable of producing the material, the parsimonious reading (Kevin Randle, Metabunk) is a hoax or mundane molten-metal dump — though no positive evidence of fabrication exists. A clean example of a ‘physical evidence’ UFO case whose analyzable material resolves to ordinary terrestrial slag (compare Ubatuba).
