IncidentThe Ladakh / Indo-China Border Lights (2012-2013)

An ITBP unit at Thakung near the 160-km Pangong Tso lake logged over 100 ‘Unidentified Luminous Objects’ between 1 August and 15 October 2012 (with the Army documenting more), the most-cited aggregate being 329 sightings between August 2012 and February 2013, objects thought to have crossed the LAC 155 times. The ULOs were yellowish spheres lifting from the horizon on the Chinese side and traversing the sky for three to five hours before vanishing. Reports reached the Prime Minister’s Office during acute Sino-Indian border friction, so Chinese drones, satellites, and surveillance were the leading suspicions; the Army deployed a mobile ground radar and spectrum analyzer that detected no signals (read as ‘non-metallic’). At the Army’s request, astronomers from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (including senior astronomer Tushar Prabhu), using the Indian Astronomical Observatory at Hanle and a theodolite, matched the object visible ~6pm-5am to Jupiter’s motion and the one ~4am-11am to Venus, the apparent ‘drift’ being Earth’s rotation and the brightness the ultra-transparent high-altitude air. The corpus’s first India / South Asia case and a clean ‘military reports an anomaly, science resolves it’ example - trained border observers fooled by planets over months, a direct parallel to the size/distance/motion-misjudgment lesson of other nocturnal-light cases.
