The ~4-second clip, recorded by a US reconnaissance aircraft over Mosul on 16 April 2016 and later used in an internal DoD briefing to destigmatize UAP reporting, was publicly released by Jeremy Corbell and George Knapp in January 2023; the DoD declined to comment, citing ‘intelligence-related matters.’ Mick West’s Metabunk analysis argues the apparent motion is parallax from the aircraft’s own movement and the object most plausibly a metal-coated mylar/helium balloon (the specular highlight implies a reflective surface; the long focal length and blur imply altitude), even questioning the ‘sphere’ label. In April 2023 AARO director Sean Kirkpatrick showed a SEPARATE 2022 Middle East MQ-9 metallic-orb video to a Senate subcommittee as an exemplar, noting that ~half of UAP reports are round/spherical and that such cases are typically unresolved but not enigmatic. The Mosul Orb is the corpus’s exemplar of the AARO-era ‘metallic orb’ discourse and a clean test of the parallax trap in interpreting ISR clips - authentic footage of an unidentified-but-probably-mundane object, with no demonstrated anomalous capability.
