IncidentThe Nash-Fortenberry Sighting (14 July 1952)
aka The Nash-Fortenberry Sighting (14 July 1952)
On the evening of 14 July 1952, two Pan American Airways pilots flying a DC-4 near Norfolk, Virginia reported a tight formation of six (then eight) glowing red disc-shaped objects passing below their aircraft at extreme speed, executing a sharp 'flip' edge-up maneuver and reversing course - one of the most-cited credible pilot sightings of the foundational 1952 wave, which Project Blue Book left classified 'Unknown.'
status history (1)
Notable & intriguing
-
Two Navy-identification-trained Pan American pilots gave a consistent, detailed account of six (then eight) glowing red discs that ‘flipped on edge’ and reversed course; Project Blue Book considered and rejected mundane candidates and classified the case ‘Unknown.’
Project Blue Book; the pilots’ True magazine account (Oct 1952)
-
The case rests entirely on eyewitness testimony - no radar, photographic, or instrument data - and the speed (~12,000 mph), size, and reversal are pilot estimates; claimed contemporaneous ground reports are absent from the official Blue Book file.
