An F-22 shot down a large suspected Chinese high-altitude surveillance balloon off South Carolina on 4 February 2023 (debris recovered). NORAD then adjusted radar parameters to detect slower, smaller, higher objects normally filtered out (Gen. VanHerck noted ~98% of raw radar data was not routinely analyzed), and within days fighters downed three small objects: a car-sized object at ~40,000 ft over Alaska (10 Feb), a cylindrical object over the Yukon (11 Feb, the first kinetic NORAD action in its ~64-year history), and an octagonal object ‘with strings’ over Lake Huron (12 Feb). Debris from the Alaska and Yukon objects was not recovered; 2024 RCMP FOIA documents suggest Lake Huron debris was recovered and may have come from a weather-equipment vendor (the RCMP unsure of the match). On 16 February President Biden said the intelligence community assessed the three small objects were ‘most likely balloons tied to private companies, recreation, or research,’ stressing there was no sudden increase - ‘we’re now just seeing more of them’ due to enhanced radar; a hobbyist ‘pico balloon’ (Northern Illinois club) went missing in the area and is a leading candidate for the Yukon object. A major modern episode where NORAD literally shot down multiple unidentified objects in days - a clean study in the ‘adjust the filters and suddenly see more’ detection effect, post-2021 institutional UAP response, and the gap between dramatic kinetic events and prosaic explanations.
