Around 22:30 on 10 September 1954, Marius Dewilde (a 34-year-old metalworker) left his level-crossing gatekeeper’s house at Quarouble (Nord, France) after his dog barked and reported a dark dome/oval mass (~3 m high x ~6 m) on the tracks and two beings ~1 m tall, broad-shouldered, in diving-suit-like garb with large helmet-heads; a beam from the object paralyzed him for ~15 seconds before it rose with smoke, a whistling sound, and a reddish glow. He reported it in distress to the gendarmerie; the police commissioner, inspectors, and French air-police recorded indentations on the wooden railway sleepers (reportedly five marks ~4 cm each, spaced ~43 cm and ~67 cm) and disturbed ballast, and left reportedly convinced an object had been on the line - though whether the marks indicate a heavy landed craft or ordinary railway wear is the interpretive crux. Dewilde is the emblematic CE3 of the autumn 1954 wave, which produced ~3,000 sightings globally (~750 in France), peaked in October, and made ‘the occupants’ a central UFO theme - seeding organized French ufology (Aime Michel, later GEPAN/GEIPAN). Aime Michel’s ‘orthoteny’ (straight-line alignment of sightings) grew from the wave but was later statistically discredited.
