During the great 1954 wave, witnesses in Tananarive reported an ‘electric green ball’ descending toward the ground near the Queen’s Palace, disappearing behind a hill, then reappearing larger. The principal named witness, Edmond Campagnac (head of Air France technical services in Madagascar), described a lens-shaped luminous object ~40 m long followed by a silvery, football-shaped metallic craft with bluish exhaust, crossing the city silently; as it passed, public and shop lights reportedly went out and came back, and dogs and zebu cattle reportedly panicked. An investigation was reportedly ordered by General Fleurquin and conducted by the Jesuit observatory director Frere Coze, who is said to have questioned thousands - but Coze’s report has never been produced, and the often-cited ‘200,000 witnesses’ is the city’s population, not a count.
