IncidentThe Ubatuba Magnesium Fragments (Brazil, 1957)

In September 1957 an anonymous, undated letter reached Rio de Janeiro society columnist Ibrahim Sued (O Globo), describing a ‘flying disc’ that exploded over Ubatuba beach, São Paulo state, and ‘disintegrated into thousands of fiery fragments’; three small pieces of white metal were enclosed. Sued passed them to physician-ufologist Olavo Fontes (APRO’s Brazil representative), whose first analysis (attributed to chemist Dr. Feigl at the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture) claimed magnesium of extraordinary purity (99.99%) lacking the normal trace impurities. That headline claim was steadily deflated: Dow Chemical’s R. S. Busk (1961) found ordinary commercial-grade magnesium; the Condon Committee’s Roy Craig (1968) found terrestrial isotope ratios and documented that Dow had produced nearly pure magnesium on request between 1943-1968; Peter Sturrock’s multi-lab study (1997-99) concluded ‘there is no evidence that the specimens are of extraterrestrial origin’; and a 2022 Journal of Scientific Exploration reanalysis (Powell, Swords, Rodeghier, Budinger) again found magnesium isotope ratios ‘within terrestrial limits’ and conceded the samples are ‘not conclusively tied to a UFO event.’ A lone modern outlier - Garry Nolan’s ~2021 nanoSIMS claim of ~30% isotopic deviation - is unpublished, unreplicated, self-caveated (‘not proof of anything’), and contradicts three controlled studies. Ubatuba is the prototype of the ‘UFO materials’ debate and directly prefigures the modern To The Stars / Nolan metallurgy discourse - sharing its central weakness: spectacular analysis applied to a sample whose provenance was never established.
