On the evening of 21 October 1978, Frederick Valentich, a 20-year-old pilot with about 150 hours and a night VMC rating, disappeared over Bass Strait. In a six-minute exchange with Melbourne flight service he reported a fast-moving object with a shiny metallic surface and a green light pacing or hovering above his Cessna 182, said his engine was rough-idling, and his transmission ended with seventeen seconds of an unexplained metallic scraping sound. No trace of pilot or aircraft was found. It is a genuinely unexplained, fatal disappearance, but with a strong prosaic candidate: the McGaha-Nickell spatial-disorientation / graveyard-spiral model, in which four lights were the planets and bright stars in a diamond, the ‘green light’ was his own right-wingtip navigation light, and the rough engine reflected fuel starvation under inverted flight.
