IncidentThe Rosa Lotti / Cennina Encounter (1 November 1954)

aka The Rosa Lotti / Cennina Encounter (1 November 1954)

On All Saints' Day 1954, at the peak of the great autumn-1954 European UFO wave, Tuscan peasant woman Rosa Lotti Dainelli reported a daylight close encounter - a small spindle/barrel-shaped craft and two ~1-metre 'men' who took her carnations and a stocking - making it Italy's first and most famous CE3, but a single-witness account with no physical evidence and an 18-year gap before any serious investigation.

under-corroborated Held under-corroborated. A single-witness CE3 with no preserved physical evidence (the one alleged trace never photographed or cast), no independent witness to the close encounter, child 'corroborators' who recanted as adults, and no serious investigation for ~18 years. It is not a demonstrated hoax and not a resolved optical artifact, so neither documented-hoax nor disputed-optical-artifact fits; the honest classification is that the core claim was never corroborated. It is, however, historically pivotal to Italian ufology - the founding Italian CE3 - and pairs naturally with the Quarouble (Dewilde, 1954, France) entry as the Italian counterpart in the autumn-1954 wave. (English-language popularizers overstate 'corroborating witnesses' and a confirmed trace; the Italian/CISU sources show those corroborators saw only same-morning lights, and the close-encounter core is strictly single-witness.)

Walking to Cennina church (Bucine, Arezzo) for All Saints’ mass at ~06:30 on 1 November 1954, carrying carnations and a stocking, Rosa Lotti reported a vertical spindle-shaped object ~20 m off the path and two ~1 m ‘men’ in grey suits and leather-like ear-disc helmets who took her carnations and one stocking, returned two carnations, ‘photographed’ her with a brown cylinder, and spoke an unintelligible ‘Chinese-sounding’ tongue. She reported to the Carabinieri, who escorted her to the clearing and reportedly found a deep hole - never photographed or cast before the curious trampled the site. The same morning ~24 separate ‘disc’ sightings were reported across Arezzo province (a wave of lights, not her entity encounter). The first serious ufological investigation came only in 1972, ~18 years later (Menicucci, then Fiorino and Pinotti); the two boy ‘witnesses’ (school-essay accounts) did not confirm their stories as adults. Italy’s founding CE3 and the Italian counterpart to Quarouble in the autumn-1954 wave, canonized internationally as no. 24 in Vallee’s ‘Century of Landings’ - but strictly single-witness, with folkloric, whimsical detail (a suitcase-sized craft, rabbit-toothed homunculi) that the Italian skeptical/CISU sources read through the wave’s psychosocial dynamics.
