In the early hours of 20 December 1958, two young men - Hans Gustavsson (24) and Stig Rydberg (30) - reported that on the coast road near Domsten they met a small disc-shaped craft on legs and three or four shapeless grey "protoplasm" beings that tried to drag Gustavsson toward the object before the men broke free and fled; long Sweden's most famous humanoid encounter, it was documented as a hoax in 1989.

At ~3 a.m. on 20 December 1958 (some accounts say the night of 19→20 December), driving home along the coast road near Domsten between Helsingborg and Höganäs, Hans Gustavsson and Stig Rydberg reported a strange light and a disc-shaped object ~5 m across and ~1 m high on legs, from which three or four small, shapeless, lead-grey “protoplasm”/blob beings emerged, seized the men, and tried to pull Gustavsson toward the craft; Rydberg broke free, reached the car and sounded the horn, and the beings retreated and the object left. The men stayed silent ~3 days (reporting anxiety, sleeplessness, bruising, reddened eyes) before the press (Helsingborgs Dagblad) carried it. They were interviewed at length (English accounts cite an >11-hour police interview on 9 January 1959), reportedly examined medically/psychiatrically and were among the earliest CE witnesses placed under hypnosis, and were pronounced sound men who had had a frightening experience - investigators reporting nothing indicating a hoax. K. Gösta Rehn (1891-1989), the leading Swedish ufologist of the era (NOT the economist Lars Gösta Rehn), publicized it, and it circulated internationally as a flagship hostile-occupant case. In 1989 Anders Liljegren and Clas Svahn of AFU (Arkivet för UFO-forskning, Norrköping) published “Domstensfallet - en svensk närkontakt 1958,” a 96-page study concluding it was a fabrication inspired by the “Tom Trick” sci-fi serial, period saucer-book advertising, and the road’s local “ghost”-stretch reputation, with fame and money the motive; three associates (named as Artur Gustafsson, Christian Johansen and Martha Christiansson) reportedly said the men admitted the hoax.

Sincerity is not truth - the case’s central lesson: the witnesses’ distress and consistency impressed police and examiners (who “couldn’t find anything that is considered a hoax”) and the men were among the earliest CE witnesses hypnotized, yet the EVENT was later documented as fabricated - examinations measure belief/conviction, not whether the reported event occurred.
