Over a six-hour period on the night of 2–3 November 1957 in and around Levelland, Texas, at least fifteen independent witnesses — including the local sheriff and a fire marshal — reported a glowing egg-shaped object whose approach caused vehicle engines and headlights to fail.

At least fifteen independent witnesses across a 20-mile radius around Levelland, Texas, on the night of 2–3 November 1957, reported engine and headlight failure in the presence of a luminous oblong object; recoveries of vehicle function were reported after the object departed.

Hockley County Sheriff Weir Clem personally observed the object at approximately 01:30 on 3 November 1957; his report describes ‘a brilliant red object… shaped like a football… about the size of a baseball at arm’s length, gliding silently across the highway 300 feet ahead.’

Project Blue Book’s official ‘ball lightning’ attribution was contradicted by the contemporaneous Air Weather Service record, which showed clear skies and no electrical-storm activity within several hundred miles on the night in question; J. Allen Hynek, then Blue Book’s scientific consultant, later cited Levelland as one of the cases that prompted his 1969 break with the program.
