Beginning at approximately 22:50 on 2 November 1957, Hockley County Sheriff Weir Clem began receiving calls from motorists reporting their cars had stalled and their headlights gone dark in the presence of a luminous oblong object on or near the road. The calls came from a 20-mile radius around the small West Texas town of Levelland. Sheriff Clem, deputy Pat McCulloch, fire marshal Ray Jones, and Levelland patrolman A.J. Fowler all independently observed the object during the night. Witnesses included truck driver Pedro Saucedo (the first reported call, 22:30), college student Newell Wright, and farm worker José Alvarez. Project Blue Book sent a single investigator, Sgt. Norman P. Barth, who spent approximately seven hours in the area on 5 November and interviewed three witnesses. Blue Book’s official conclusion was “ball lightning” — despite the fact that the official Air Weather Service record for the night showed clear skies, no thunderstorm activity, and no precipitation within several hundred miles. The Levelland case is the most-cited single-night EM-effects cluster in Blue Book’s files.

Project Blue Book’s official ‘ball lightning’ attribution was contradicted by the contemporaneous Air Weather Service record, which showed clear skies and no electrical-storm activity within several hundred miles on the night in question; J. Allen Hynek, then Blue Book’s scientific consultant, later cited Levelland as one of the cases that prompted his 1969 break with the program.
